World Ocean Day 2022: World Ocean Day is celebrated every year on 8 June to raise global awareness regarding the important role of oceans in human life and the necessary efforts for their conservation. Oceans are the main source of food and medicines and a very important part of the biosphere, so their conservation is very important.
History of World Ocean Day
With the rapid pace of development in the world, the speed of contamination of the oceans has also increased at the same rate. To prevent this, it was decided to celebrate World Oceans Day every year in 1992 in a forum named ‘Planet Earth’ in Rio de Janeiro. Its concept was then proposed at the Earth Summit by Canada’s International Center for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada.
Its purpose was to inform people about the impacts of human activities on the oceans, to develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the oceans, and to unite the global population on a project for sustainable management of oceans across the country. This observation was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, after which the day began to be celebrated internationally on 8 June every year in collaboration with ‘The Ocean Project’ and ‘World Ocean Network’.
Purpose of World Ocean Day
The main purpose of celebrating this day is to throw light on the topics of biodiversity, food security, ecological balance, climate change, indiscriminate use of marine resources, etc., and to create awareness in the world about the challenges posed by the oceans. Actually, seas have a very important place in the earth and our life, but still, we do not pay any special attention to their conservation. Instead of preserving it, we are engaged in contaminating it. Due to this, the oceans around the world are getting polluted badly due to increasing human activities.
Theme of World Ocean Day 2022
This day is celebrated every year with a theme, so this year the theme of World Ocean Day is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.
